Digital Literacy: New ICT Facility for Girls in Elmina

The Michael Kunke Foundation has handed over a newly established ICT Center to Catholic Girls’ Primary School in Elmina, marking another step in its ongoing efforts to expand digital literacy and equitable access to technology for school-aged children.

The project was funded by RazorSpire, an Ireland-based technology company, with additional support from Nana Ekow Ankama of Lemon Beach Resort. The intervention responds to a long-standing gap in practical ICT learning at the primary level, particularly in public schools where access to computers remains limited.

Building on a growing digital footprint in KEEA

This ICT Center is the second facility delivered under the Foundation’s Digital Literacy Initiative in the KEEA Municipality. The first, established at Elmina M/A School, was funded by the Czech Development Cooperation. Together, the two projects form part of a coordinated approach to strengthening foundational digital skills at an early stage of learning. Rather than isolated donations, the initiative is designed to improve learning outcomes by integrating practical ICT exposure into everyday classroom activities. Early access to digital tools supports problem-solving, creativity and confidence, while better preparing pupils for future academic transitions where technology use is increasingly required.

Advancing girl-centered development

The Catholic Girls’ Primary School project carries additional significance for the Foundation because it directly advances one of its core values: girls’ empowerment through education. By situating the ICT Center in a single-sex girls’ school, the project intentionally addresses gender gaps in access to digital skills, which often emerge early in a child’s education.

Rose Ageiwaa, Head of Digital Technology Skills at the school, expressed appreciation for the support and assured the Foundation that the facility will be actively integrated into teaching and learning.

“This center gives our pupils the opportunity to learn by doing,” she said. “We are committed to using it fully to strengthen digital skills and confidence among our girls.”

Partnerships that strengthen local systems

The project reflects the Foundation’s partnership-driven development model, which brings together private sector support, local institutions and community leadership to deliver sustainable outcomes. By working with donors who share a long-term vision for education, the Foundation continues to strengthen local learning systems rather than create short-term interventions.

Looking ahead

As digital competence becomes increasingly essential for education and employment, early investments such as this ICT Center help ensure that girls in Elmina are not left behind. For the Michael Kunke Foundation, the goal remains clear: to equip young learners with practical skills, confidence and opportunity—starting in the classroom and extending into the future.

When girls gain access to digital tools early, they gain more than skills; they gain the ability to shape their own futures.
