Restoring Stability in Eguafo Project Report

Rebuilding a School, Restoring Stability in Eguafo

Context: When Infrastructure Becomes a Barrier

In 2024, Eguafo Methodist A Junior High School reached a critical point. Repeated heavy rains had compromised the roofs of four classrooms, forcing teaching out of the school compound and into temporary community spaces. Learning time was lost, attendance declined, and the school’s ability to provide a safe environment came into question.

What had once been a functioning learning space became a source of uncertainty for students, teachers, and parents alike.

The Intervention: A Targeted Infrastructure Response

In response, Michael Kunke Foundation implemented a focused reroofing intervention designed to restore safety, stabilise learning, and rebuild confidence. The project prioritised durable construction, local participation, and long-term resilience rather than short-term repairs.

Four classrooms were identified for full reroofing and structural reinforcement, with materials procured and work initiated in close coordination with school leadership.

Navigating Setbacks with Adaptive Management

Implementation faced significant challenges. A transport accident destroyed most of the roofing materials, requiring emergency resource mobilisation. Seasonal rains further delayed timelines. Through adaptive planning and sustained coordination, the project remained on course without compromising construction quality.

These adjustments reflected a development-led approach: responding to risk while maintaining accountability and standards.

Outcomes: Stability Restored, Learning Resumed

The completion of the reroofing marked a turning point for the school. Four classrooms were returned to use as safe, weather-resistant learning spaces. Teaching resumed without disruption, and students returned to classrooms with renewed confidence.

Attendance rose sharply, enrollment increased, and classroom engagement improved. By the end of the academic cycle, academic performance reflected this stability, with a near-total pass rate at the Basic Education Certificate Examination.

Community Engagement and Ownership

The project extended beyond construction. Local artisans contributed skilled labour, community members supported implementation, and school stakeholders actively participated in decision-making. This collective involvement strengthened accountability and reinforced the school’s role as a shared community asset.

A strengthened School Management Committee now oversees infrastructure upkeep, supported by parent contributions and trained local artisans—embedding sustainability at the local level.

Looking Forward: Infrastructure as a Foundation for Growth

With safety restored, the school community has begun planning for the next phase of development, including access to electricity, learning laboratories, furniture, and library resources. These priorities reflect a shift from crisis response to long-term educational improvement.

A Development Lesson

The Eguafo MA JHS reroofing intervention underscores a fundamental development principle: when learning environments are secure and dignified, educational outcomes improve and communities re-engage. Infrastructure, delivered with partnership and local ownership, becomes a catalyst for resilience and sustained impact.
