Improving School Attendance Through Shoe Donations in KEEA

On many mornings in KEEA, the walk to school begins without shoes. Children step onto dusty roads and wet ground in bare feet or in footwear long past its usefulness not by choice, but by circumstance. For some families, anything that covers the feet, no matter how worn, is considered enough. For others, going barefoot has simply become part of everyday life.

It was this quiet reality that informed a recent intervention by the Michael Kunke Foundation. With support from BlackPush Enterprise and Latifa Williams, the Foundation donated more than 30 pairs of shoes to pupils at Ponkrom and Breman Basic Schools, offering protection, dignity and a renewed sense of confidence to learners in need.

The response from students was immediate and heartfelt. They were beaming with smiles all over. Some pupils made a deliberate decision to save their footwear for Monday, explaining that they wanted to return to school at the start of the new week with clean uniforms, washed schoolbags and shoes that still looked brand new. For them, it was not just about receiving something new, but about feeling prepared and proud.

From a development perspective, access to appropriate footwear plays a critical role in child wellbeing and school participation. Shoes reduce the risk of injury and infection, especially for children who walk long distances to school. Just as importantly, they support psychosocial development by helping learners feel confident and included, factors closely linked to attendance, engagement and learning outcomes.

“These may look like small items, but their impact is far-reaching,” the Foundation noted. “When a child feels comfortable and confident, the classroom becomes a place of possibility rather than limitation.”

The donation reflects the Foundation’s broader approach to education support, addressing everyday barriers that often go unnoticed but significantly affect learning in underserved communities. By meeting immediate needs while reinforcing dignity and self-worth, such interventions help create conditions where children are better positioned to thrive academically and socially.

This is how small, thoughtful actions translate into comfort, confidence and hope in the classroom.
