Transforming Epowano: Access to Clean Water and Sanitation for a Sustainable Future
Epowano, a coastal village in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) district of Ghana’s Central Region, is home to a community of 300 people. These hardworking individuals, primarily engaged in artisanal fishing, farming, and small-scale trading, face urgent challenges that threaten their health, well-being, and economic opportunities.
The Urgent Challenges Facing Epowano
1. Lack of Sanitation Facilities
With no access to proper toilet facilities, both children and adults are forced to practice open defecation along the serene beach. This not only endangers public health but also pollutes the environment, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
2. No Reliable Access to Clean Water
Epowano residents depend on surface water, which dries up during the dry season, leaving them without a safe water source. This scarcity affects daily life and exacerbates hygiene-related illnesses, especially among children and the elderly.
3. Plastic Waste and Environmental Pollution
Poor waste disposal practices, particularly plastic waste accumulation, contribute to environmental degradation, affecting marine life and the overall beauty of the village.
Our Mission: A Sustainable Solution for Epowano
Freelancenana Travels, in partnership with the Michael Kunke Foundation, is spearheading a transformative humanitarian project to address these critical issues. Our goal is to enhance sanitation, provide clean water, and promote environmental sustainability through:
1. Construction of a 10-Seater Modern KVIP Toilet
• A child-friendly, gender-segregated facility to improve hygiene and restore dignity.
• Designed for long-term use with sustainable waste management systems.
2. Installation of a Mechanised Borehole
• A reliable source of clean drinking water to improve sanitation and health.
• Equipped with a storage system to ensure year-round water availability.
3. Waste Management and Environmental Education
• Training programs on proper waste disposal, recycling, and conservation.
• Encouraging community-led initiatives for a cleaner and healthier environment.
4. Community Employment and Empowerment
• The project will employ skilled and unskilled labourers from Epowano, including carpenters, masons, and general workers.
• This ensures economic benefits reach local families while fostering community ownership of the initiative.
Aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This initiative supports multiple UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
• SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being: Reducing disease risks by eliminating open defecation and improving water quality.
• SDG 4 – Quality Education: Healthier children will have better school attendance and learning outcomes.
• SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation: Providing a fundamental human right—access to clean water and proper sanitation.
• SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: Offering employment opportunities to local workers.
• SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Promoting a cleaner, healthier living environment for Epowano.
Long-Term Impact on the Community
• Healthier Families: Reduced exposure to diseases will enhance the well-being of children, the elderly, and vulnerable groups.
• Improved Education: Reliable sanitation and clean water will prevent illnesses that cause school absenteeism.
• Sustainable Environment: Community education on waste management will help preserve Epowano’s natural beauty and marine ecosystem.
