Improving School Attendance Through Shoe Donations in KEEA

Stepping Forward: How Proper Footwear is Transforming the School Day in KEEA

For many pupils across the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality, the journey to the classroom begins long before the school gates come into view. Every morning, children navigate dusty paths and damp ground either barefoot or wearing footwear that has long passed its functional lifespan. For families facing severe economic constraints, anything that covers the feet regardless of its condition is often considered sufficient. Over time, going without adequate shoes has simply become an accepted part of daily life.

To help address this hidden barrier to education, the Michael Kunke Foundation recently undertook a targeted support initiative. With generous backing from BlackPush Enterprise and Latifa Williams, the Foundation distributed over 30 pairs of school shoes to pupils at Ponkrom and Breman Basic Schools, providing essential protection, restored dignity, and a renewed sense of confidence to children in need.

Immediate Relief and a Fresh Start

The response from the children was immediate. Many pupils expressed an eager determination to care for their new shoes, explaining that they planned to save them for Monday morning so they could return to class with pristine uniforms, washed bags, and footwear that looked entirely brand new. For these learners, the donation was about much more than a new item of clothing; it represented a chance to walk into school feeling prepared, equal, and proud.

The Development Impact

From a community development perspective, access to appropriate footwear is a vital component of child wellbeing and educational retention. Proper shoes significantly reduce the risk of foot injuries, cuts, and waterborne infections particularly for children who walk several miles each day to reach school.

Beyond physical health, appropriate footwear plays a crucial role in psychosocial development. When children feel properly equipped and comfortable, they are less likely to experience self-consciousness or stigma, allowing them to engage more fully in classroom activities and extracurriculars. These factors are directly linked to improved attendance, sustained engagement, and stronger learning outcomes.

These may look like small items, but their impact is far-reaching,” noted a representative from the Michael Kunke Foundation. “When a child feels comfortable and confident, the classroom becomes a place of possibility rather than limitation.

Sustainable Community Support

This initiative forms part of the Foundation’s broader commitment to educational equity, focusing on the everyday obstacles that often go unnoticed yet heavily influence a child’s academic journey in underserved communities. By addressing immediate material needs while actively reinforcing personal dignity and self-worth, such interventions help lay the groundwork for children to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.

Through targeted, thoughtful actions, grassroots partnerships are helping to ensure that every child in KEEA can take their next steps toward education with comfort, confidence, and hope.
