MKF And Czech Embassy Launch Farm With The Wings In Egyeikrom

When the Michael Kunke Foundation signed an agreement with the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Accra and Lemon Beach Resort to build a community poultry farm at the Egyeikrom Refugee Camp, it set in motion a project with a name as hopeful as its ambition: Farm With The Wings. For the camp’s 1,412 Ivorian refugees, long reliant on short-term aid, the agreement offered something different: a route to work, income and independence they could build for themselves.

Established by the Government of Ghana in 2011 on 53 acres donated to Ivorian asylum-seekers and refugees fleeing the civil unrest that followed Côte d’Ivoire’s 2010 presidential election, Egyeikrom is today home to 1,459 persons of concern. Camp management falls to NADMO, with oversight from the Ghana Refugee Board, but day-to-day life for its roughly 300 families has long depended on aid that covers today without building toward tomorrow.

Farm With The Wings was designed to change that. The project comprises six chicken chambers and a small, high-hygiene butchery with the capacity to process 250 animals a month, all built entirely by the refugees themselves using their own skilled labour. The ambition behind it is threefold: to create a small business unit that can stand on its own financially and generate profit for the community that runs it; to meet proper hygiene standards at commercial scale; and to secure steady, paying customers among the hotels and resorts of Elmina and Cape Coast.

The partnership agreement was signed by Michael Kunke, Founder and CEO of the Michael Kunke Foundation, and Lukas Kindl, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ghana.

“This project is a dream come true for a number of the refugees, as it will serve as a source of employment and revenue generation for the over 300 families living in the camp.”

A supply contract has already been signed with Lemon Beach Resort, with further hotels and resorts under discussion as regular customers for the farm’s produce.

With Farm With The Wings now complete, the Michael Kunke Foundation and its partners have backed a different kind of support for Egyeikrom: not aid that runs out, but a business the community owns, runs and profits from.
