The Challenge
In 2022, Eguafo MA Junior High School in Ghana’s Central Region faced a critical infrastructure emergency. Four classrooms suffered severe roof damage from heavy rainfall, forcing the relocation of classes to abandoned community rooms.
The deteriorating conditions disrupted teaching, reduced student attendance dramatically, and severely impacted morale amongst both pupils and staff.
Re-roofing of Eguafo Junior High School
In early 2025 we received an SOS message from Eguafo M/A Junior High School concerning their 4 classroom block which had its roof blown off during a rainstorm two years ago. With the aid of our partner Razorspire (RazorSocial) we were able to replace all the roofing slates and the students have moved in to start lessons after 2 years. The community also contributed by taking care of the minor masonry work. A big thank you also goes to Lemon Beach Resort for their role.
Site Reconstruction Stages
Before
Open roof of Eguafo Junior High School, students exposed to the harsh weather.
After
Completed Junior High Roofing: Roofing now anti-leak and students protected from weather.
Our Work & Scope
Working in coordination with local master craftspeople, the Headmaster, and the dedicated School Management Committee (SMC) the Michael Kunke Foundation engineered a permanent reconstruction rather than cosmetic repairs:
- Structural Reinforcement: Re-cast reinforced foundation columns and repaired lintels to eliminate collapse hazard.
- Weatherproof Enclosure: Complete installation of treated timber rafters, roofing slates, and proper perimeter rainwater channels.
- Classroom Fixtures: New roofing for the entire 4 classroom block
Impact
The Eguafo MA JHS Reroofing Project successfully restored four damaged classrooms into safe, weatherproof learning environments, sparking a major academic and community transformation. Following its completion, student enrolment grew from 93 to 111 pupils, daily attendance reached an impressive 97.3%, and the school's BECE pass rate surged to 97% from a previous 76%. This revitalised infrastructure significantly boosted student morale, enhanced teacher focus and punctuality, and restored deep community pride and confidence in the school's educational standards.
Long-Term Community Maintenance
As with all MKF initiatives, project ownership was formally transferred to the local School Management Committee (SMC) and PTA. MKF conducts bi-annual structural inspections to ensure routine maintenance protects donor investment.
