The Challenge
Local students at Elmina M.A. Primary and Junior High School faced significant challenges in science and ICT, including a lack of laboratory facilities, forcing them to travel over 7 kilometres to Essaman United Junior High School to take part in practical lessons.
This distance posed logistical and financial burdens for families, which ultimately led to a decline in students’ hands-on learning opportunities and academic performance in science and ICT.

Our Work
Funded by the Czech Development Cooperation with support from Lemon Beach Resort and implemented by the Michael Kunke Foundation, the project converted an old assembly hall into a fully equipped science and ICT laboratory.
- Structural and safety enhancements: A retaining wall was built to stabilise the building’s foundation against erosion. The exterior was repainted, and new louvre blades and burglar-proofing were fitted on all windows and doors.
- Dedicated science and ICT labs: The rear of the building was converted into a science lab with essential equipment for practical experiments, while the main hall now houses the ICT lab, equipped with 20 computers, specialised furniture, and space for robotics, coding and collaborative activities.
- Meeting and training space: An additional area was furnished with seating for 20, a ceiling fan, and a whiteboard, set up to double as a space for meetings and projector-based training sessions, with a projector donated as part of the project.
- Electrical and power upgrades: The entire building was rewired, and a backup inverter was installed to ensure uninterrupted lessons.
Impact
Students at Elmina M.A. Primary and Junior High School now have on-site science and ICT facilities for the first time, ending the need to travel over 7 kilometres to Essaman United Junior High School for practical lessons. The new lab gives them regular hands-on access to 20 computers and a fully equipped science lab, supporting coursework in both subjects, while the added meeting and training space (seating for 20, with a projector) lets the school also host staff training and community sessions on-site.
