The Challenge
At Agona Amanful ADA Pre-School in the Agona East District, kindergarten pupils were learning literacy and numeracy with limited, improvised materials. Teachers relied on individual letter cards that had to be stuck together on the blackboard with cellotape or starch to form words, a slow and often ineffective way to teach young children to read.

Our Work
The Kunke Foundation, formed in 2006 and focused on communities in and around Mensakrom in the Agona East District, donated a set of Teaching and Learning Materials (TLMs) to the school to support hands-on literacy and numeracy teaching.
- Hands-on Learning Materials: The TLMs let children easily form objects such as chairs and tables, and build two-letter words, replacing slower, improvised teaching methods.
- Teacher Support: Kindergarten teachers reported a marked improvement in how quickly pupils could read alphabets and numerals once the materials were introduced.
- Founder Commitment: Michael Kunke, founder of the Foundation, pledged to extend similar support to other schools in the region.
“Formerly what we were using to teach the kids were letter cards which was time consuming… we always had to go in search of cello tapes or starch to stick two letters together on the blackboard to allow the pupils read and learn,” said Mary Afful, KG 2 teacher at the school.
Impact
With the TLMs in daily use, pupils at Agona Amanful ADA Pre-School were reading alphabets and numerals and forming objects and two-letter words on their own, a marked improvement from before the donation.
