Back-to-School Support: Equipping Pupils in KEEA

Equipping the Future: Overcoming Back-to-School Barriers in KEEA

At the beginning of the academic year, many children in underserved communities return to the classroom without the basic tools they need to learn. While education is a fundamental right, the everyday costs of schooling often create a quiet, invisible hurdle before lessons even begin.

For some pupils, the new term starts with old, frayed bags slung over their shoulders. Others arrive clutching loose exercise books to their chests, with nothing to carry them in. In more challenging cases, children resort to improvisation using plastic bags or discarded food containers from public events as school carriers. Though rarely discussed, these daily struggles erode a child’s confidence, heighten self-consciousness, and contribute directly to absenteeism. When families are facing severe economic strain, purchasing basic stationery and bags is simply out of reach.

A Practical Intervention for Sustainable Learning

To help bridge this gap, the Michael Kunke Foundation through its Education Empowerment for Sustainable Communities (EESC) initiative, implemented a targeted back-to-school support project. Designed to restore dignity and motivation among vulnerable learners, the project distributed approximately 200 school bags and essential stationery to pupils across the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality.

Beneficiary schools were drawn from local communities where the need for basic educational materials remains high. Each child received a complete starter pack containing:

  • A sturdy school bag
  • Exercise books
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Pencil sharpeners

These simple provisions play a critical role in improving school attendance, strengthening self-esteem, and encouraging active classroom participation.

Partnerships Rooted in Shared Responsibility

This distribution was made possible through a strategic partnership with Freelancenana Travels and the generous support of Dr. Armen Ross.

“This is a project we are proud to undertake every year with the Michael Kunke Foundation,” noted Nana Duawosu Preston, CEO of Freelancenana Travels. “When children go to school feeling confident and prepared, it directly affects how they engage with learning.”

Michael Kunke, founder of the Foundation, emphasised that the intervention extends far beyond material distribution:

“These bags and learning materials serve as tangible encouragement. They remove one more barrier that could otherwise keep a child out of the classroom during the academic year.”

Accountability and Community Impact

During the outreach, Dr. Armen Ross commended the Foundation for its transparent, needs-based approach, highlighting the vital role of accountability in grassroots development work. He encouraged individuals and institutions to continue supporting local non-profit organisations committed to creating measurable change at the community level.

Through collaborative action and shared responsibility, the Michael Kunke Foundation continues to advance its core mission: ensuring that no child is denied an education because of preventable material barriers. Small, thoughtful interventions delivered with integrity can fundamentally shift how a child experiences school and how they view their future.
